New NCR Server Supports Data Warehouse App

NCR’s Teradata division is shipping NCR’s new 5400 Server, which it claims performs as much as 20 percent faster than previous servers running the company’s data warehousing solution.

Combined with Teradata Warehouse, the NCR 5400 Server can store and process up to 4.2 petabytes, the company says.

The new server, which is built around dual Intel Xeon EM64T 3.6 GHz processor technology with hyper-threading, supports Microsoft Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003, as well as NCR Unix SVR4 MP-RAS version 3.03, according to a company spokesperson.

Intel’s hyper-threading technology enables a single processor to manage data as if it were two processors by handling data instructions in parallel rather than one at a time.

Teradata, which like its parent company is based in Dayton, Ohio, shipped version 8.0 of Warehouse in early February.
