Multi-threaded Engine Boosts Secure Copy’s Performance

ScriptLogic is shipping Secure Copy 4.0, an important update to the company’s Windows server data migration product that adds multi-threaded copying aimed at providing the fastest copying performance among Windows 2000 Server and Windows Server 2003.

Secure Copy is designed to ease migration from Windows NT to Active Directory and for storage consolidation. It automates data replication between Windows NT/2000/2003 servers without agents or scripts.

Version 4.0 is the first release of Secure Copy since ScriptLogic purchased Small Wonders and its server management products in early 2004.

The new release features an enhanced user interface as well as a multi-threaded engine meant to maximize performance when executing copy jobs on large quantities of servers, according to a company statement. One new feature enables administrators to request automatic retries for failed copy jobs.

Additionally, Secure Copy 4.0 maintains file permissions when transferring data between servers, thus helping provide Sarbanes-Oxley Act compliance. Besides files and folders, it also migrates NTFS permissions, file shares, file share permissions, local users and groups, and compression settings.

“Secure Copy 4.0 automates the hardest part of migration from NT 4 to Windows 2000/2003 servers by correlating NT 4 file security data to user and group accounts in the new Active Directory environment and, where necessary, creating user/group accounts in AD to correspond to local user/group accounts on the source server,” the company’s statement says.
