Disk-to-disk Appliances Add Hot Backup

Unitrends is shipping new software for its disk-to-disk backup and restore appliances that enables administrators to back up the entire system all the way down to the bare metal without having to take down the server.

Dubbed Hot Bare Metal, the software is being bundled as part of Unitrends' integrated solutions in its Data Protection Units and Data Protection Vaults appliances.

The product is designed to capture a complete image backup on a live system without requiring shutdown. In the event of a crash, Hot Bare Metal is then supposed to enable a full restore in 30 minutes or less.

Using the software, administrators can take system snapshots at the same time that they perform regularly scheduled system backups. Hot Bare Metal also captures and saves open data files and open applications as well as passwords, permissions and other settings that allow end-users access to critical data.

Hot Bare Metal supports Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003.
