MSN is expanding the beta program for the next generation of its Hotmail Web-based e-mail service, known by the code-name "Kahuna."
The next group of testers will include external users such as tech enthusiasts and consumers in select markets.
Billed as "faster, safer, simpler," Kahuna is known more formally as the Mail Beta. High-level features in Kahuna include an Outlook look-and-feel to the Inbox, a "Kahuna" look-and-feel to the Calendar, a rich text editor from MSN Spaces, better search, a 2-GB mailbox limit and an "Infobar" safety feature for protection against phishing attacks, viruses and spam.
Specific feature requests in Kahuna include a reading pane, drag-and-drop, right-click functions, streamlined attachment downloads, multiple-item select, keyboard shortcuts, single-click addition of contacts when sending e-mails and auto-complete of contact info in e-mails.
