EMC Shoots for SMB Markets

Storage vendor EMC Corp. said Monday it has begun shipping the first components of a new line of its storage products scoped for small and medium-sized business use, and will soon ship others.

Called the Insignia line, EMC trotted out versions of both its Clariion AX Series disk arrays as well as of its Storage Administrator for Exchange, Retrospect, RepliStor, VisualSRM and eRoom software packages optimized for use by SMBs.

EMC’s Clariion AX Series disk arrays are designed to help SMBs lower costs through server consolidation, sharing storage among multiple computers, and by making backups to disk, according to a statement by Hopkinton, Mass.-based EMC. Pricing for the Clariion AX100/i, which is currently available, starts at $5,500.

The company’s EMC Storage Administrator for Exchange SMB Edition aims to simplify management of Exchange Server, to provide fast recovery, and to streamline migration to Exchange Server 2003. It is also available now and starts at $1,995.

Retrospect, which EMC acquired in 2004 when it bought Dantz Development, provides “smart” backup and recovery. The package, which is also available immediately, costs $399.

Meanwhile, EMC RepliStor SMB Edition, which aims to provide data replication between two Windows computers locally or remotely across the Internet, thus continuously maintaining an updated copy, is coming out later this quarter. It costs $995 per node.

Also coming this quarter, VisualSRM SMB Edition has been scaled to suit SMB usage for storage resource management tasks. It starts at $995. Finally, the company also plans to release this quarter an SMB Edition of its eRoom collaboration software, which starts at $995 for 10 users.
