Clustering and Rolling Upgrades (Exam 70-642)

Performing a rolling upgrade from a Windows 2003 failover cluster to Windows 2008 can be accomplished using which method?

  1. Windows 2008 does not support failover clustering.
  2. There is no failover cluster upgrade path possible from Windows 2003 to Windows 2008.
  3. Create a failover cluster running Windows 2008 and use the wizard to migrate resources.
  4. Upgrade node 1 and then node 2 to Windows 2008

C. Windows 2008 supports the migration of certain failover cluster resources from Windows 2003 with the included wizard.

Answer B is mostly correct; however the question of performing a "rolling upgrade" is tricky. A rolling upgrade implies an upgrade of each node's operating system image, and that feature is not supported. Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Edition is required for the role Failover Cluster.

Tip: Both the cluster servers' hardware and software should be identical for optimum success.

Tech Reference: "You cannot upgrade the operating system of a clustered server from Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2008"
