Windows Server 2008 R2, Desktop Virtualization Pop Quiz: Enable and Manage Windows XP Mode

Applies to the "Deploying and Managing a Presentation Virtualization Environment" objective of Exam 70-669 TS: Windows Server 2008 Desktop Virtualization.

Q: Which versions of Windows 7 are required to install Windows XP mode? Choose three.

  1. Windows 7 Professional
  2. Windows 7 Home Premium
  3. Windows 7 Ultimate
  4. Windows 7 Enterprise

Answer and explanation is below.

Answer is A, C, D: Only Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate, and Enterprise support Windows XP mode. The PC must support hardware-assisted virtualization and be enabled in BIOS. Also, Windows XP mode and Virtual PC must be installed; both can be downloaded free at Microsoft.com.

Quick Tip: Windows XP mode allows users to run programs that would normally only run in a Windows XP environment. When a program is installed in Windows XP mode, the program appears in both the Windows XP mode list of programs and in the Windows 7 list of programs, allowing the user to open the program directly from Windows 7.
