Pop Quiz: Group Policy Processing, Precedence in Windows
Applies to the "Configuring Hardware and Applications" objective of Exam 70-680 TS: Windows 7 Configuration.
Q: What is the Windows 7 group policy processing order and precedence?
- D-S-L-OU
- OU-D-S-L
- S-D-OU-L
- L-S-D-OU
Answer and explanation is below.
Answer is D: The Windows 7 Group Policy processing order is Local Group Policy Object, Site, Domain, and OU in that order. This order ensures that the local GPO is processed first, and GPOs that are linked to the organizational unit of which the computer or user is a member are processed last. Settings that are defined in earlier group policies can be overwritten by later group policies with the Organizational Unit settings having the final precedence.
Quick Tip: Windows 7 supports multiple local group policies for different uses such as local computer policy, administrators, non-administrators, and user-specific local group policy settings.
