Pop Quiz: Keeping Time in Windows 7

Applies to the "Identifying and Resolving Deployment and Client Configuration Issues" objective of Exam 70-686: Windows 7, Enterprise Desktop Administrator.

Q: A company's help desk has logged calls from users complaining about the lack of access to domain-based resources. The Windows 7 desktop support team has identified that the users' PCs are configured to synchronize with a manual time source. The team needs to resolve the authentication problems. Which tool can be used to resolve the authentication problems?

  1. Djoin
  2. Net Time
  3. W32 Time
  4. W32tm

Answer and explanation is below.

Answer is D: The W32tm command can be used to configure a client computer for automatic domain time synchronization. Open a command prompt and type w32tm /config /syncfromflags:domhier /update. Once complete type Net Stop w32time followed by Net Start 232time. Note: Membership in the local Administrators group is required.

Quick Tip: Net time /DOMAIN:mydomain.com will query a domain for time of day, and can be used to determine if the master time keeper (PDC Emulator) server for the domain needs to be configured to sync with an external Internet time source for the most accurate information.
