Pop Quiz: Windows Server 2012: Hyper-V VLANs

Applies to the "Configure Hyper-V" objective of Exam 70-417.

Q: A company's administrator is planning the virtualization of eight network-services servers using Windows Server 2012.

Which of the following Hyper-V virtual switch function would allow the administrator to set up a specific VM as a virtual appliance, and then direct traffic from various VLANs to that VM in Windows Server 2012?

  1. Trunk mode to a VM
  2. Port ACLs
  3. DHCP Guard protection
  4. Isolated (private) VLAN

Answer and explanation are below.

Answer is A. Trunk mode to a VM enables administrators to set up a specific VM as a virtual appliance, and then direct traffic from various VLANs to that VM.

Quick Tip: The Set-VMNetworkAdapterVlan cmdlet configures virtual LAN settings for the traffic through a virtual network adapter. Access, Trunk, Private VLAN (isolated, community, or promiscuous), and untagged, are mutually exclusive.
