Pop Quiz: Windows Server 2012 R2 VMM Service Templates

Applies to the "Plan and deploy a server infrastructure" objective of Exam 70-413.

Q: A company's IT team is in the planning stages of deploying a series of new System Center 2012 R2 VMM Service Templates using the Service Template Designer. The team needs to include Two Tier Applications templates.

Which of the following should be considered when deploying VMM Service Templates? (Choose all that apply.)

  1. What computers (physical and virtual) need to be deployed to support the service?
  2. What applications need to be deployed?
  3. What networking components are used?
  4. Who will use the service?

Answers are A, B, C, and D. Before creating VMM Service Templates the necessary resources must be available. These include VMM library resources such as VHDs, logical networks and perhaps load balancers, VM hosts and host groups, private clouds, hardware, guest operating system, application, and SQL profiles, virtual machine templates, and monitoring and reporting.

Quick Tip: You must configure a load balancer for a tier before you deploy a service. After you deploy a service, you cannot add a load balancer by updating the service.

Bonus Question: What is the name of the technology available in Windows Server 2012 R2 that automatically discovers IP address infrastructure servers? (The answer, of course, will be revealed next time!)

Answer to bonus question from last week: Windows Server 2012 R2 supports the ODX storage area network technology that allows copying of VMs bypassing the host.
