CORBA Scales to More Than 75,000 TPS

Compaq (www.compaq.com) recently demonstrated a zero latency enterprise (ZLE) telecommunications solution that reached more than 75,000 CORBA transactions per second (TPS).

The heterogeneous system involved NonStop Himalaya servers, ProLiant servers and Tru64 Unix Alpha servers connected by CORBA-conformant object request brokers (ORBs).

The ZLE demonstration, carried live via satellite from Cupertino, Calif., to an Object Management Group (OMG, www.omg.org) meeting in Cambridge, Mass., last month featured a 111-terabyte real-time operational data store (ODS) containing 100 billion call detail records. The solution used CORBA technology with both Java and C++. It also simultaneously processed customer service inquiries at 1,000 TPS, conducted data mining with 128-way parallel queries, wrote summary data to several data marts on remote platforms, published events, and supported online database reorganization.

The ZLE architecture demonstration utilized Compaq NonStop DOM and NonStop Java ORB (JORB) middleware that conforms to the OMG's CORBA architecture. However, users will be able to mix and match a variety of CORBA-conformant configurations including Java objects, ORBs, IBM MQSeries middleware, TP monitors, enterprise application integration (EAI) software, and data stores. -- Isaac Slepner
