Microsoft Issues RC2 of SharePoint Portal Server

After saying Release Candidate 1 (RC1) of SharePoint Portal Server would be the only one, Microsoft went and issued an RC2.

SharePoint is a new collaboration server designed to provide a portal, document management, and enterprise search capabilities. Microsoft originally called the server by the code name Tahoe.

RC1 went out Jan. 8 of this year. At the time, Microsoft said it would be the only release candidate for the product.

RC2 includes new functionality called Personal Dashboards. The feature gives users some control over the layout of their own workspaces.

The release candidate addresses several problems in RC1 including setup issues, latency in category creation, and a problem of the system hogging up to 125 MB of disk space while creating workspaces. In another fix, SharePoint now automatically triggers refreshes whenever portal content changes.

Testers also ran into problems running SharePoint RC1 on the same server as Exchange 2000. The problem won’t be fixed until Exchange 2000 Service Pack 1.

SharePoint RC2 won’t work with beta versions of Office XP. The final version of Office XP was released to manufacturing on Monday. – Scott Bekker
