A major competitive knock on Dell Computer Corp. storage products was their focus on Dell's own installed base of servers.
While capturing the installed base is a key motivator for all server vendors that also sell storage, being able to interoperate with other vendors' hardware is still an important selling point.
Dell made the move beyond its own servers this week with the announcement that its PowerVault SAN now supports Windows servers from several vendors including Compaq, IBM and HP.
