IBM Targets NCR Teradata with Migration Program

IBM Corp. on Wednesday unveiled a user migration program for NCR Corp. Teradata users.

Officially, IBM added NCR Corp.'s Teradata database to its DB2Now! migration program, which includes migration programs for several competing databases.

IBM's bid for existing Teradata customers focuses on DB2's multi-platform flexibility. DB2 runs on 22 platforms, including Windows NT and Windows 2000. Teradata customers run the high-end database primarily on NCR's own proprietary hardware and operating system.

However, NCR did port Teradata to Windows NT and Windows 2000 in the last few years.

Analyst Mike Schiff with Current Analysis says IBM's move has to be seen in the context of its recent acquisition of the Informix database technology and Informix customer base.

"Everybody and their grandfather either formally or informally has done an Informix migration program," Schiff says. "It's going to at least make [IBM] look like they're on the offensive, when they're obviously on the defensive."
