Intel Ships 2.4 GHz Pentium 4

On its way to delivering 3-GHz Pentium 4 processors by year's end, Intel Tuesday shipped a 2.4-GHz version of the processor.
The new version represents about a 9 percent clockspeed improvement over the 2.2-GHz Pentium 4, which had been Intel's top-of-the-line desktop processor.
Intel is charging $562 for each of the 2.4-GHz Pentium 4 processors in 1,000-unit quantities. For now, Intel is not announcing a price cut for the 2.2-GHz Pentium 4, which also costs $562. Both the 2.4 GHz and the 2.2 GHz come with 512KB of level-two cache.
With this processor release, Intel is emphasizing manufacturing and shipping volume improvements. The company says it now ships more than 10 times the number of Pentium 4 processors compared to its first full quarter of Pentium 4 processor production in Q1 2001.
"We have enhanced our 0.13-micron process with faster transistors, smaller feature sizes and 300 mm manufacturing efficiencies, while we continue to ramp up production in multiple factories," senior vice president and general manager of Intel's technology and manufacturing group, Sunlin Chou, said in a statement.
