Intel Holds Line on Itanium 2 Prices

Pricing for Intel's second generation of 64-bit processors will be fairly similar to the chipmaker's pricing for the first generation.
Along with the formal launch of its Itanium 2, or "McKinley," processors on Monday, Intel revealed pricing for the new silicon.
The top-of-the-line Itanium 2 processor will come at a clockspeed of 1 GHz with 3 MB cache for $4,226. That price is almost exactly what Intel charges for the top models in its original Itanium line, where a 733-MHz or an 800-MHz processor, both with 4 MB (off-die) cache, each cost $4,227.
Lower in the lineup, Intel has cranked up the prices slightly.
Its second most powerful Itanium 2, a 1-GHz version with 1.5 MB cache, is $2,247. The bottom-of-the-line Itanium 2 chip is a 900 MH processor with 1.5 MB cache for $1,338.
Those prices compare with the middle-of-the-road original Itanium, an 800-MHz model with 2 MB cache for $1,980 and a 733-MHz model with 2 MB cache for $1,177.
