Windows Server 2008 Volume Licensing (Exam 70-642)

Which of the following is the most efficient way to activate 15 volume-license computers running Windows Server 2008 on a remote subnet that has no Internet access?

  1. MAK independent activation
  2. MAK proxy activation
  3. KMS host activation
  4. Retail key activation

[Scroll down for the answer and a bonus question.]

B. MAK (Multiple Activation Key) proxy activation is the most efficient way to activate fewer than 25 computers that have no Internet access.

MAK proxy activation uses an XML file to gather installation IDs from the computers to be activated. You then obtain confirmation IDs from Microsoft on a computer that can connect to the Internet, and these are used to activate the computers.

A KMS (Key Management Service) infrastructure for activation requires at least 25 or more computers that require activation. And all KMS clients must communicate with a KMS server at least once every 180 days.

Tip: MAK independent activation requires a phone call to Microsoft for each activation.
