Pop Quiz: Migrating to Windows 8.1

Applies to the "Install and upgrade to Windows 8.1" objective of Exam 70-687.

Q: A company's desktop deployment team needs to migrate all user profile data from many Windows Vista Enterprise 64-bit computers to new devices running Windows 8.1 Enterprise 32-bit using the least amount of administrative effort.

Which method can be used to migrate user profile data from Windows 64-bit to 32-bit machines?

  1. USMT 5.0
  2. Windows Easy Transfer
  3. Copy user files to a flash drive
  4. Copy user files to a network share

Answer is D. USMT (User State Migration Tools) and WET do not support user profile migration from 64-bit to 32-bit Windows machines.

Quick Tip: The USMT tools Scanstate.exe, Loadstate.exe, and UsmtUtils.exe are included with the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (Windows ADK) available from Microsoft.com and must be installed on the source and destination machines.

Bonus Question: What is the name of the command-line utility that can be used to pre-stage drivers in a Windows 8.1 device? (The answer, of course, will be revealed next time!)

Answer to bonus question from last week: The Device Registration Service (DRS) is the name of the new Windows service found in Windows Server 2012 R2 that provides an onboarding mechanism for seamless second factor authentication, persistent single sign-on (SSO), and conditional access to consumers that require access to company resources.
