Living with Windows NT 4.0
Reports of Windows NT 4.0's death are greatly exaggerated.
While Microsoft's onetime flagship operating system is seven years old, it remains in wide use and actually got a reprieve from a planned deadline that would have ended paid incident support for the product later this month.
What's more, some of Windows NT Server's contemporaries, Windows NT Workstation, SQL Server 7.0 and Exchange 5.5, all got reprieves of their own.
Microsoft's handling of the support issues around Windows NT and its generation of products show the software giant is gradually learning that it is a legacy product vendor with attendant responsibilities to customers.
