Cisco Unveils New Integrated Network Products

Cisco Systems Inc.'s new 6700 series of network products is able to integrate voice and data into a single stream and distribute it appropriately across a network. Most organizations retain separate infrastructures for data and voice communications. The new products can cut infrastructure costs in two ways: supporting both services with the same hardware, and allowing staff to support both data and voice with the same equipment, reducing confusion and specialization.

The 6700 series is also compatible with dedicated legacy devices such as routers and private branch exchanges (PBXs), allowing an organization to integrate their services without a complete upgrade of the infrastructure.

Cisco foresees a rise in integrated access devices (IAD), which, when coupled with one of their products, will allow the end user to communicate in a variety of ways, including via voice, data, and fax. The 6700 series includes the 6705 IAD, which is designed for remote terminal applications. Additionally, the 6700 series offers DSL support, enabling service providers and other enterprises access to the new services on a larger scale.
